On:Trac approached Tripledub with an urgent need for a system that would search for and display data about UK railway maintenance sites and the hazards they posed for staff working there.
Any solution needed to be intuitive and fast, since the information would be used by engineers before they went on site to maintain and build rail infrastructure. It was important that staff could find relevant information quickly, update it with details of their own planning, and print out only the data they needed.
The database also needed to be secure and extremely reliable since it would provide staff with health and safety information such as risk assessments and the location of nearby emergency facilities.
The solution was a web-based application that met and exceeded the customer's very specific requirements. Despite the complexity of the project, the technologies Tripledub chose resulted in a reliable and manageable application.
The application was created using state-of-the-art, industry standard technologies and frameworks: PHP/CakePHP for server side processing, MySQL database engine for data storage and XHTML/CSS/JavaScript/jQuery for the front end user interface.
From the user's point of view, it gathers hazard information, images and diagrams, dynamic maps, local services, and technical details such as signal layout. It is easy to use, so that staff do not need elaborate training to start working with it.
It allows users to remove or keep elements as needed then print off the information and includes editable text fields, so that operatives can add information before and after they've completed work..
Peter Johnson of On:Trac sums up how Tripledub worked on the project:
"We had an urgent need for a solution that worked first time. Tripledub really delivered. They met the time targets, and delivered a pristine piece of work that we were able to get running in a short period of time.
Working with Stewart and the Tripledub team was very easy. They didn't simply deliver an application, they helped us plan and design the process users would follow to access the information. As a result we were able to get the database up and running within our project deadline."
